So what does a commissioner do?
County Commissioners function in three areas - unlike the separation of executive, legislative and judicial powers at the state and federal level.
As executives, we direct and evaluate appointed department heads. As legislators, we enact ordinances that have the force of law countywide. And, in making land use decisions, we render judgments as a quasi-judicial panel measuring testimony from opposing sides against objective review criteria.
None of the three commissioners individually has any more, or less power than the others to act. Any board action requires at least two of the commissioners to be in agreement. All actions by the board must be conducted in open public meetings.
The variety and complexity of issues facing county government daily makes the job of being a County Commissioner interesting, frustrating, and rewarding all at the same time.
It's a full time job and then some!
